Grimo Nut Nursery - June 3, 2025
Our visit to the Grimo Nut Nursery was especially enjoyable and the weather was perfect for an outdoor event. There were around 30 of us listening to Linda Grimo talk about how her father got into the business of growing nut trees in Niagara, walking us around the various nut trees, explaining the characteristics of the various nuts and letting us crack some open to sample them. The store was open too where we could buy them by the pound. We now have a new appreciation for the complexity of nut growing in Niagara.

What a great turnout! Twenty-seven members were impressed with the warm welcome, extensive knowledge, and the enthusiasm given by the costumed interpreters while sharing the beauty and history of the McFarland House and surrounding area.
Extra attention and shout out goes to the delicious scones and the wide variety of teas that were offered to our members. It was an unforgettable experience with so much history attached to Niagara on the Lake.

Apple Hill Apothecary - April 16, 2025
We had a good turnout for the Apple Hill Apothecary on Wednesday, April 16. Melissa, the owner, gave us an overview of how she got into the herb business (she used to be a potter then went to Cornell to retrain and came back committed to herbal medicine) and then went on to give us examples of various herbs and what they can do for you. These herbs are recommended by naturalists for various ailments but are not meant to replace traditional medicine although if you take them regularly you may not need as much medical intervention. By law the apothecary can prescribe herbal treatment but not diagnose so you need to tell them what you want to address. After the talk we were treated to herbal tea and cookies while we wandered around the store examining various products such as tinctures, teas and salves.
British Home Children - NOTL Museum - March 19, 2025
David Hemmings told us all about the history of Niagara-on-the-Lake and the British Home children He has done extensive research into the lives of these children and his presentation and research can be found at British Home Children - Niagara-on-the-Lake Museum
The talk covered British Home Children administered through two Homes in Niagara-on-the Lake and Hamilton between 1868 and 1932. So, do you know if your grandmother or great-grandmother might be a “home child”? – born in Britain or Ireland and shipped to Canada because she was a poor orphan, unwanted child, urban waif or stray. These children were placed on farms and in homes to work as domestic servants or farmworkers. Most came from appalling home conditions and were destined for a life of servitude. The luck of the draw determined if they landed with a family that looked after them or simply treated them as indentured servants. In Niagara-on-the-Lake there was a home that trained hundreds of young girls to be servants and maids.

Niagara College Tour and Lunch - February 19, 2025
The tour included the greenhouses, the spa, the winery and more, all open to the public.
Here's a few words from Linda Hicks on the event. "The tour itself was very informative. I wasn’t aware of the various events the college presents for the public and will definitely be looking into the spa opportunities the students provide.
The smaller group sittings at lunch in the Benchmark restaurant were definitely a plus. The menu provided something for everyone’s taste and enjoyment. The presentation of each course was lovely! The food was savoury and the unique little ingredients to the dishes added to the delicious flavour. The staff were friendly and accommodating.
The highlight of the day was finding out about the “Benchmark To Go” shop for take-away prepared meals .I know some of us took advantage of shopping on our way out! The shop is open 10 to 2 each day.
Visit the Benchmark Restaurant for more details including the menu.
Not All Women are Saints - January 29, 2025
 |
Shawna Butts, the assistant Curator at the museum talked about the situations of some of the NOTL women whose records she had found in the various archives who had interacted with the law from the mid-18th century up until the First World War. At first there were no judges and three male magistrates decided on cases and handed down sentences. Women did not exist as individuals once they were married. They were basically the property of their husbands. Women did not often report sexual assault because they had little chance of winning a case.
|
NOTL was always a military town so there was lots of demand for sexual services over the years. The law was not applied equally, for instance, if a man ran a "common bawdy house", his wife could be charged with disorderly conduct with an associated fine or prison sentence. Her husband, however, would often not be charged. Woman often had to turn to prostitution to feed themselves and their family especially if their husband was killed in a war. Shawna gave us many examples of these cases which she had found in archives. It was fascinating to hear how few rights women actually had at that point in history. Learn more about the NOTL Museum. They have many interesting presentations and events. It's a great way to learn about the NOTL community.

Holiday Planter Workshop - Gauld Nurseries - November 27, 2024
 |
On November 27, 2024, a group of members went to Gauld Nurseries in Niagara Falls for a Holiday Planter Workshop. Some of us knew what we were doing, others were new to creating with evergreen boughs. It didn’t matter though…Karen from Gauld gave us step-by-step instructions and encouragement as we went along.

There was a wide selection of greenery to choose from and knick knacks galore. Just being inside their workroom smelled like Christmas and got you immediately in the festive spirit. We all shared greenery, creative advice and caught up while working like busy little bees making some pretty spectacular pieces as you can see from the pictures. If you couldn’t make it this year, please keep it in mind for next time. Happy holidays!
Community Awareness - November 20, 2024
The Annual “Community Awareness Event” on November 20th proved to be successful for both participants and the public. The nice weather brought out a good crowd. The various organizations added their own personal “flair” to decorating their spaces from using Christmas trees and lights to Mardi Gras masks and feathers, ukulele’s galore, to General Brock, himself (!) who showed up. There seemed to be a “relaxed air” to the afternoon; chatting amongst friends and neighbours and community members. NOTL Newcomers hope attendees found just the right group to volunteer their time with. A big thank you goes out to the following organizations for participating this year:
- NOTL Museum
- Shaw Guild
- NOTL Horticultural Society
- Newark Neighbours
- Bravo Niagara
- Accessible Niagara

NOTL Ghost Walk - October 16, 2024
|
A full moon, a man in a top hat and cape carrying a lantern.....what else could you ask for.....our second Newcomers Event....."THE GHOST WALK".
Fifteen members braved the not-so-chilly night. With the full moon, it was a perfect night for walking up and down the streets of Niagara-on-the-Lake listening to tales of days long ago told by our tour guide, Daniel Cumerlato. He added juicy tidbits here and there, shared secrets and answered all our questions in 90 minutes.
|
Among the haunts we stopped at and discussed were: the Royal George Theatre (has a lighting tech ghost who pops on and off stage as the curtain rises/drops and an actress ghost who hip butts stage frightened actors onto the stage); the Courthouse; the Prince of Wales (Molly McGuire accidentally killed as a red coat by an American soldier haunts Room 207- no ghost tax on this room); the Olde Angel Inn ( Captain Colin Swayze still lurks in the basement after he died in a rum barrel, struck through with a bayonet after found hiding from American soldiers....it has been reported that the Captain likes to still frequent both bathrooms downstairs); Niagara Apothecary (the secret we learned was in the late 1800's seances were held on the top floor of the building); Trisha Romance gallery/house (a woman supposedly wanders the halls, cameras are affected strangely here); the former site of the first Courthouse/Jail (first place to hang a woman with her accomplice for poisoning her husband); the Gazebo (site of Queens Royal Hotel, supernatural film location/ specially built for "The Dead Zone" by David Cronenberg; ending with the Paranormal Museum (haunted by a little girl). If we didn't believe in ghosts before the tour......GHOST WALKS gave us enough information to spark our imagination. Daniel only hit on the more famous. The list goes on and on. See for yourselves why NOTL is referred to as Canada's most haunted town! BY's Honey Bee Farm Tour - October 8, 2024
It happened to be really sunny and warm, we visited BY’s Honey Farm and were met by Ed the bee keeper and (I believe) owner. He first took us to see the treatment area where there were a number of therapeutic treatments available using bee products for various medical conditions. He works closely with doctors in Germany who are at the forefront of apiary medicine. He was adamant that apiary products can cure just about any ailment especially using the bee venom. Some treatments he mentioned were cartilage rebuilding, even cancer treatment. There is even a room where you relax and inhale the air from the bee hives. There is a small cabin that is full of bees where you lay down on a bench to receive multiple bee stings for venom treatment. (I don’t think so!) The honey, honeycomb and pollen all have wellness benefits too.
Ed explained how most commercial honey even if it says unpasteurized has been heated to keep it in a liquid state. The heating destroys a lot of the benefits from the honey. He said that he couldn’t necessarily make you live longer but he could help you to feel a lot better. Next, we visited the hives and we looked inside them. He used a smoking device to calm the bees so they wouldn’t get angry and he accessed the hive from the back, not the front where you are more likely to get stung. He explained that you could adopt a hive for $100 annual fee, decorate it any way you like, visit it whenever you want and get two jars of honey from it or you could buy a hive outright and keep at home complete with the bees for $500-$600.
Lastly, we went to their honey shop where there were lots of interesting products like honey comb, Immune Boost Raw Honey and bee pollen and many flavoured honeys and we stocked up with healthy and YUMMY choices.
Welcome Back Meeting - September 18, 2024
Sharon Noble-Hudson, Program Director
If you didn’t make it to the “Welcome Back Meeting”, you missed a good one. We had roughly 85 – 90 members in attendance with a good showing of our “newbies”.
Members had a great variety of Interest Groups to choose from to fill their weekly schedules. If you missed the meeting, you can check our website for a complete listing of Interest Groups. If you would like to reach one of the Group Coordinators you will find the contact info in the MEMBERS section of the website using your Last Name and your Membership number to access this section. Remember you need your NEW membership number.
Joanne Young, NOTL’s premiere garden coach spoke to the group about new and exciting plants for our area and expertly answered questions. She joked about talking for three hours…which the audience wouldn’t have minded since she was so informative and interesting.
Below, you will find a link to her “slide presentation” she generously provided us with, so you can make note of what to plant for next season.
It was a good start to an action-packed year of fun, skill learning, history, conversation, food, drink, and friends for NOTL NEWCOMERS. Welcome Back Ladies!
